Students from the first semesters of Photography, Illustration, and Animation at AKTO’s I.S.A.E.K.<\/a> visited the retrospective exhibition of photographer Roger Ballen<\/strong> at the Benaki Museum<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition, titled \u201cShadows of the Mind\u201d<\/strong> (November 6, 2025 \u2013 January 25, 2026)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

was an opportunity to review Roger Ballen’s ability to transform an image beyond the limits of narrative and medium, as well as his interest in bringing to the forefront what lies at the periphery of our consciousness. Ballen’s work breaks down the boundaries between photography and other arts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Ballen is known as a photographer, his practice incorporates drawing, painting, installation, and video, transforming photography into a medium that explores a multitude of visual forms, extending photography far beyond the simple capture of what is in front of the camera. He creates scenes that unfold within a claustrophobic environment, made from worn objects, written wallpapers, strange faces or human bodies, illuminated with strict, stark precision. Within this dense, oppressive space, Ballen creates a world that defies all logical explanation \u2014 a world where the irrational, chaos\u2026 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Always aiming to raise awareness about international and African issues through artistic actions and educational programs, he compels the viewer to look into the inner worlds of their own thoughts and emotions beyond merely projecting a version of reality. To be emotionally ‘cornered,’ to take a stance on this reality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Few Words About Roger Ballen<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roger Ballen (New York, USA, 1950) is considered one of the most important photographers of the 21st century. He has published more than 25 books and directed over 10 videos and short films, while his works are included in the most important international museum collections. He has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Art and Design from Kingston University, UK (2018), and has received significant awards, such as: Artist of the Year by Suddeutsche Zeitung Magazin (2014), Photographer of the Year at Rencontres d\u2019Arles (2002), Best Photography Book PHotoESPA\u00d1A (Madrid, 2001), Artist of the Year at Photosynkyria (Thessaloniki 2000). In 2022, he was selected to exhibit at the South African pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale, and a year later, he founded the Roger Ballen Inside Out Centre for the Arts and Photography<\/a> in Johannesburg, aiming to raise awareness about international and African issues through artistic actions and educational programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
